Before you start with measures for sound insulation of the apartment, you should know where the noise comes from. Because it is not always walls or ceilings between two apartments to blame. The sound transmission can also take place via chimneys or installation shafts. The exact course of the sound paths can only be determined by special measurements. Only then can successful improvement measures be tackled. What types of sound are there? The measures for sound insulation depend on the type of sound. Basically, a distinction is made between airborne and structure-borne noise. A special form of structure-borne noise is the impact sound. 1. Airborne sound Airborne sound refers to the propagation of sound waves in the air, e.g. through speech, music, barking of dogs or sounds of devices. The sound hits components, is then partially reflected, partly converted into heat and emitted again on the opposite side as airborne sound. Airborne sound therefore arises wherever air comes through and the sound can spread. Measures: airborne sound can be reduced by mass. If, for example, the wall to the neighbor is too pervious to sound, the sound can be effectively dampened with the help of a “second shell”. Even with an airborne noise reduction of 10 dB, the audible noise is reduced by half. 2. Structure-borne noise Structure-borne noise does not spread through air vibrations but through vibrations in solid bodies. For example, if the neighbor hits a nail, then the structure-borne sound initially spreads in the wall, but then changes to the wall surface in airborne sound and is then perceived by the human ear. Sound waves emanating from washing machine, fan, refrigerator, etc., belong in this category. Measures: Structure-borne noise can be prevented by the acoustic separation of components. Another possibility is to avoid the formation of structure-borne noise. 3. Impact sound Impact sound is a special form of structure-borne noise caused by footsteps or falling objects. So if your neighbor in the apartment above you has a penchant for wooden slippers, you will be able to hear each of his steps with poor sound insulation. Measures: An elastic decoupling, which prevents a transmission of the sound, helps against the impact sound. Sound-insulated floor constructions such as impact sound insulation panels between screed and floor covering are a possible measure. Noise insulation Ceiling 1. Suspended ceilings against impact noise The simplest solution to reduce footfall noise from above would often be a carpet on the upper floor. If the neighbor does not play along, the suspension of the ceiling is also a possibility for the subsequent noise protection in the apartment. In this case, a construction with gypsum boards is mounted on the ceiling below the actual ceiling at a distance of at least 10 centimeters in the new building and up to about 20 centimeters in the old building. The resulting space between the ceiling and cladding is filled with mineral wool or other suitable insulation materials.
